Franz Rogowski delivers a heart wrenching performance as Lubo, a humble and impish street performer in the Grisons canton of Switzerland. The year is 1939, and Lubo is conscripted by the Swiss army to defend the country’s borders. Soon after, he learns that his wife has been killed in her attempt to stop the gendarmes from taking away their three small children, who, as Jenisch, have been removed from their family as part of the national program of re-education for “children of the road” (Hilfswerk für die Kinder der Landstrasse). So begins Lubo’s decades long quest to find his children and exact his revenge.
